Hello friends,
am soon to have my medical by ATOS, am feeling incredibly stressed and emotional by the whole thing and concerned that the medical officer will not have a clue about ra and how it affects one's life! My feet/toes/ankles/knees and hips etc are frequently affected causing me problems leaving me unable to weightbare and in much pain so sometimes need to use my wheelchair but im concered as to how i will be able to perform the tasks asked of me at the medical.

Any advice from others who have had their atos medical greatly appreciated.
Thanks
XXX.

Hi Emily ..
try not to be stressed .. there is not a lot you can do except attend the medical and be truthful about how your condition affects you .
It is always a good idea to have someone with you , and you are allowed to do so.

Above all remember that the medical is only part of the process , which will also include , your ESA 50 form and any evidence from your GP/Consultant etc that you have supplied .

Unfortunately on here and at CAB we generally only get to here of the badly done medicals , and not those where due care and consideration has been taken.
Perhaps get the person who you go with to take mental notes of where they thought the medical was and wasn't a true representation of what you can and cannot do .
Legislation states that repeatability has to be taken into consideration , so being able to do something once is not a good indication of your capabilities.

Bear all this in mind .. but also bear in mind that if the Health Care Professional "examining" you is rude or forces you to do something which puts you in pain ..then there is recourse to a complaints system with ATOS .

If the whole result is not in your favour then you do have the option of appealing the DWP decision within one month of that decision, and remaining on ESA at the assessment phase rate of money.

I am hoping someone posts on here who has gone through the process [i will be being migrated from Incapacity Benefit to ESA soon ] , and please let us know of your experiences:)

hi emily, i have done first atos medical last year and i took my son with me,the lady who i got was ok and really nice but did tutt alot when she asked me to do something and i said no or not very well but it went ok i felt she was more interested in what i done all day than what i could do all day, my son felt she was asking in a way to get me to say something without thinking,to catch me out, sadly i am genuine but i was granted esa on the work related,i have now got my result for this year,i had a longer list of meds this year and i am bit worse and have now got support group esa, and no interview thankfully, it was ok but be well prepared and take all meds with you even if you dont use them all the time, beware i had a flight of stairs when i got there but i did find a lift, also my son noticed a cctv on all sides of the building outside and all over the inside i felt very uncomfortable being watch all the time to be fair and they did keep me waiting so by the time i got in i was really stiff,i kept standing and sitting so much my son got a bit cross with me bless him he is only 28,i'm sure it will go ok for you its the unknown again, just be honest, but do answer as if its a bad day as they do pick up fast on the way we discribe ourselves, the woman actually said about my walking stick and did i get cramp in my hand with my splints on when using it and how did i get on wearing a heel when/if i go out, etc,i felt she was nosey but in fact she must have been working me out,all the best, dorothy

Hi Emily, i have been through this earlier in the year. Like you i was very stressed about it and felt like giving up at one point and trying to live on my small pension alone.

The lady who interviewed and examined me was a nurse and very approachable. I took all my splints and soft collar and all medication with me. My son took photos of all the aids and appliances i use in the house, such as kettle tipper, sawhandled knives, grab rails and extra stair rail etc, plus photos of adaptations on the car, and photo shopped them onto pieces of paper. The nurse seemed impressed by these as it gave her a good idea of what i need, to manage on a daily basis. She asked me how i got there and where we parked, and how long it took me to walk from the car park, i took my husband with me.

The examination was not too stressful and there was a third of it which i couldn't manage, i didnt have to get undressed but i would advise wearing comfy trousers.

They said i would hear after a month but i heard after two weeks by phone followed by a letter and i was placed in the support group for esa.

Best of luck Emily

Hi Emily,

I too have received a call for a Medical for ESA. Its scary. I was diagnosed with RA but as there is no evidence in my joints (good thing) the consultant thinks I am in remission and reduced the MTX inj to 15mg from 25mg. He also thinks that I may have Fibromyalgia as I am still in considerable pain and constantly tired, so he put me on Amitrpytaline and Pregabalin as well as Sertraline, MTX and Folic Acid plus Co Codamol.

I am self employed and own a Newsagents with my hubby but cannot work! Its cold, people always come in coughing over me and spreading germs, involves lifting, stock control, cash and carry, operating the till and computer etc etc. I am scared that who ever does the medical will look at me and judge me, before asking questions.

People who I meet always say "oh you look well" and I always think - you should see me try to get out of bed, or make a coffee. Its that unseen disease. The one that says if I am up and dressed I am ok!! How wrong can that be.

How can someone you have just met clearly know how you cope? Unless you burst out crying with anger and pain and frustration??

My thoughts are with you Emily - My appointment is 12th Dec and I'll post how it went. Could you do the same?

Keep your chin up!

Lxxx

Hi all
sorry i havent been on for some time, wrists and hands have been bad. i hve recently been for my esa assesment and was really confused by it. expecting the worse, i was shocked when after waiting for over 1 and 1/2 hours i saw a doctor who was so nice waited for me to get out of the chair, as i was stiff and then asked if my husband was helpful he apologised for the delay and told me that he wouldnt keep me long, as he had my questionaire in front of him. i was asked a few questions about my home life how i coped with stairs and that was it. it lasted around 25 mins. i am now waiting for a decision and am really confused.
